| Growing into a Second Century - Gifts - Photos |
On May 21, 1906 work began on a new church building for Augustana Lutheran Church.
A basement was dug and a stone foundation was built that first summer and by fall the floor was laid and the frames complete. The plan was for a church building sixty feet long and thirty-eight feet wide with a large sub-basement and an eighty foot spire. Including electricity, a hot air furnace and stained glass windows, the cost was to be $10,000. Work had to stop for the winter but in the spring of 1907 the building team resumed their efforts. The first service was conducted in the new church on the Sunday before Christmas in 1907. That building has served the people of Augustana and the community well for the past century.
A Second Century:
As we move into the second century as a congregation, it is clear that changes are needed. Ministry needs change. Our congregation is growing. We have a large number of children and youth, and we have wonderful new opportunities for mission and outreach in our community. This is an exciting time for Augustana. Our Growing into a Second Century Stewardship and Building Fund Appeal is one way we can address these changes and opportunities.
Sunday December 23 is the 100 year celebration at Augustana, a wonderful accomplishment!
Last summer when we were landscaping the Church we uncovered the original cornerstone that was an important part of the first Church construction so many years ago. The cornerstone was "hiding in plain sight" behind a group of trees on the Northeast corner, just waiting to be rediscovered.
For all these years our cornerstone proudly maintained vigil as our members arrived to worship, our youngsters were baptized, our children were married and raised families, and our members left to meet Jesus. There have been many changes in the last century but the constant thread that keeps us all together is the strength of that "old brick Church." We can imagine a small group of members gathering around the Northeast corner with trowel in hand carefully laying the stone and wondering how long it would last. We are truly the benefactors of those first members who proudly left their bold "1907" mark a century ago.
Congratulations! John and Nancy
